DESCRIPTION:High School Diplomats (HSD) is a scholarship program that brin
 gs together high school students from the United States and Japan each sum
 mer through two parallel experiences. With HSD U.S. American students trav
 el to the East Coast of the United States to participate in eight days of 
 cultural exchange alongside a Japanese roommate on the campus of the Unive
 rsity of Virginia.  With HSD Japan American students who complete the U.S.
  program travel to Japan for several weeks the following summer. Each part
 icipant in the program is given a generous scholarship that pays for room\
 , board\, activities\, and international transportation costs.\n\nHSD U.S.
  is an eight-day program providing 20 American students the opportunity to
  engage in academic and social pursuits\, and forge lifelong friendships w
 ith 20 Japanese students of the same age. During the eight-day program hos
 ted on the grounds of the University of Virginia\, each American student i
 s paired with a Japanese roommate. The program is sponsored each summer by
  AIG General Insurance Co.\, Ltd.\, along with the Freeman Foundation.\n\n
