High School Diplomats U.S. Exchange Program

Hosted by High School Diplomats (US)

University of Virginia , Charlottesville , Virginia · United States

High School Diplomats (HSD) is a scholarship program that brings together high school students from the United States and Japan each summer through two parallel experiences. With HSD U.S. American students travel to the East Coast of the United States to participate in eight days of cultural exchange alongside a Japanese roommate on the campus of the University of Virginia. With HSD Japan American students who complete the U.S. program travel to Japan for several weeks the following summer. Each participant in the program is given a generous scholarship that pays for room, board, activities, and international transportation costs. HSD U.S. is an eight-day program providing 20 American students the opportunity to engage in academic and social pursuits, and forge lifelong friendships with 20 Japanese students of the same age. During the eight-day program hosted on the grounds of the University of Virginia, each American student is paired with a Japanese roommate. The program is sponsored each summer by AIG General Insurance Co., Ltd., along with the Freeman Foundation.
